How Metal Shearing Works and Its Common Pitfalls?
Metal shearing is an essential process in manufacturing. This is the main step in making a sheet metal trim and removing unwanted material to make it useful. There are various types of shearing lines used for metal shearing, depending mainly on the type of work and the results to be achieved.
5 Common Metal Shear Defects
Metal shear defects are common for various reasons. Such flaws can affect the quality of work and lead to dissatisfied clients. That's why it's important to analyze the flaws and work on the solutions.
1. Twist
It is very common for the metal plate to curl into a spiral or corkscrew immediately after being pierced. This is mainly caused by excessive rake angle (the angle between the front of the tool and the vertical line of the metal sheet), sometimes, the metal tends to twist due to its properties. The rake angle must be adjusted according to the type and thickness of the material.
2. Campers
Camber is the amount of deflection of the material. This occurs when the sheared metal leaves the sheet horizontally. It can be avoided by adjusting the stamping speed, adjusting the rake angle, or changing the grain direction of the metal.
3. Deformed Edges
Distorted edges make the cut material look rough and unfinished. This can happen due to the following situations.
- Grossly incorrect blade clearance
- Dull or damaged blades
- Improper hold and hold pressure
To avoid edge deformation, please set the gap correctly according to the type and thickness of the cut material, make sure the blade is sharp, and check whether the material is firm and does not slip during the whole process. If it persists and the problem persists, your machine may need service as it may have a ram pivot bearing problem.
4. Burred Edges
Edge burrs are caused by the improper clearance between the shearing blades or dull blades. To avoid burrs on the edges, the operator must have proper knowledge of the material type and thickness as well as the clearance of the machine for the best results. Also, make sure your machine's shearing blades are sharp and smooth.
5. Bow
Cutting thin, narrow strips of the material requires proper attention as the material tends to bow downwards due to stresses inherent in the material itself. To avoid bending, keep the rake angle to a minimum.
Investing in the best quality shearing blades and machines is essential to avoid such defects in the long run. If you want to buy a shearing machine, please contact us.
